This truly is a shame because although being such a dark film, with an air of pessimism, it will alienate it's audience Hollywood movies are all about optimism after all. It initially flopped, and has since gained a cult following as has Manhunter, Mann's next crime thriller. The real shame is that Thief remains a film that only real movie enthusiasts have seen. It's sad to think that Caan's career could have been infinitely more memorable had he not succumbed to his well publicised Hollywood vices. He is playing an unsympathetic character on surface yet he brings out an inner depth and torment within Frank that is engrossing. Caan is electrifying here, given a role in a very pessimistic film. The calibre of actors who have that rare ability to captivate the audience in such an imitable way. At his best, as in Thief, and Godfather, he is at the apex of acting talent with De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson. The thing about Caan is, he is an exceptional, but wasted talent. It is actually one of Caan's personal favourites too.

it's a film that ends somewhat tragically as we realise there won't be a happy ending for Caan, and that his character is destined to be alone, or hurt those he will be with.James Caan is exceptional here, in fact I like many feel that this is his best role. A seemingly harsh act in Jessie's eyes but little does she know that Frank is really giving up his life so that she can be safe. He has to put on a cold and distant exterior as he is forcing his wife to leave, forever, with their child. Of course he can't leave and Frank is put in the position where he has to tell his love Jessie, that she has to leave. As the film culminates to a massive heist, exceptionally pulled off by Frank, he has a wife and child, happy to take his earnings and retire. However Frank is under the misconception that he will take down just one score and that will be that but Leo Robert Prosky has other ideas. He wants to recruit Frank, who initially hesitant agrees. Frank is set in his ways, looking for scores, however he becomes involved with a a big time gangster, who sets up half the scores in the city. īegins to realise as the film progresses that this is merely an illusion. This film needs to be viewed by anyone who enjoys crime films, mob films, or Mann films. He does love and care for his wife and she loves him without reservation. That came as quite a shock to this viewer. What surprised me the most about this movie was not just the realism of it but that the love interest side of the story was convincing as well. His acting is second to none and perhaps the best of the three signature Michael Mann anti-heroes. James Caan really convinces you he is the real deal and it's the role of a lifetime. I have surprised myself twice in two sentences. I never thought I would hear myself say this but Willie Nelson does a fine job acting at least in this. The supporting cast was hand picked and it's easy to tell. So Frank is forced to fight back and prove he is not only the best thief but the toughest crook in Chicago. Please come down from your mountaintop of superiority.Frank's new crime family wants more than his services. I also sensed a lot of condescension from you. I just can't find the reason to justify watching it again. All in all, I'd like to sincerely like it. As far as * everything but the visuals, it doesn't really draw me in that much either be it the Seinfeld effect, or be it just me not rolling with it an not being engaged, but nothing in the film really hooked me in. If your job was to convince me that I should care, when I was apathetic, what would you say? What is there that can convince me that this isn't a yet another cookie cutter movie from the 80's, because at least visually, it looks painfully stuck in that decade, not having aged particularly well over all this time. All the tension, the buildup, the politics, and then it seemed like I either missed something that was totally crucial to making me appreciate it, or was underwhelmed by anticipating more than what the film would deliver. Primer I'm not averted to rerouting 100% of power to attention.

Movies that mindfuck you into oblivion, I also love, e.g. I will similarly eat up crime films, be it of the caper kind, the comedy, or akin to the category of films where nothing ever happens, crime films where nothing ever happens (like say, Zodiac). I'll eat up La Dolce Vita or La Grande Belleza any day of the week. That's the thing with me though, I LOVE films where nothing ever happens, and will gladly take all the talky scenes over explosions.
